Papers, 1854-1885.

The Reuben Fenton Collection contains an assortment of materials relating to all phases of his political career. It includes handwritten drafts that were probably a part of a published biography of Reuben Fenton; handwritten speeches delivered late in life mostly for ceremonial occasions that are largely devoid of commentary in political issues with the exception of one speech endorsing James G. Blaine for President on 1884. Also included in this collection, are an assortment of letters, 1854-1885 and a bound book of telegrams, 1865-1868, which concern diverse topics as election campaigns, matters of patronage, and mustering out regiments at the conclusion of the Civil War.

Born in the Town of Carroll, Chautauqua County, New York on 4 July 1819, and was educated in a rural school. At the age of twenty he moved to Jamestown, where he entered the lumber business and soon became a prosperous merchant. He also studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1841. Elected to Congress as a Democrat in 1852, he vigorously opposed the extention of Slavery, and soon afterward joined the Republican Party and was elected to Congress of that party, representing the Chautauqua Distr...
